Black History Month
Every February, we recognize Black History Month, an opportunity to learn about and celebrate the contributions of African, Caribbean, Black (ACB) Canadians to the history and culture of our nation. The 2025 national theme — Black legacy and leadership: Celebrating Canadian history and uplifting future generations — is a call to honour the past while looking ahead to a more equitable and inclusive future.
Over the next month, there are many opportunities to learn about and celebrate the contributions of African, Caribbean and Black (ACB) Canadians to the history and culture of our nation. We encourage you to check out the following activities and resources to commemorate Black History Month:
Black History Ottawa’s event calendar for a list of events happening in the city throughout February
A special presentation at the February 12 City Council meeting to officially recognize Black History Month, including a Black National Anthem “Lift Every Voice and Sing”
A visual display curated by the City of Ottawa Archives team will be featured at City Hall and on digital screens in February to offer a glimpse into the contributions of the Black community in shaping a more inclusive Ottawa
